![]() His faithfulness to share God’s revelations to an unfaithful nation is our ultimate example to persevere in preaching, teaching, and sharing the Gospel. He is an example of perseverance by continually preaching and teaching God’s word, despite all that was done to him. Jeremiah was blessed by God and tasked with preaching God’s word to his people. Even in the darkest times, through death and turmoil, questions of faith and God, Job was faithful and trusted God’s plan. Job’s story is the ultimate test of faith and example of perseverance in the Bible. God then had mercy on Job and restored his health and all his possessions, granting him twice as much as he had previously, more children and a long prosperous life. Job also intervened for his friends and God had mercy on them, despite their horrible advice. Realizing the power of God and overcome by it, Job recognized God’s true character and accepted his own faults and constraints as a human. God eventually intervened and implored Job to be brave. Job questioned how a just God could allow such terrible things to happen, even to a faithful servant. But soon his praises turned to questions, bitterness and anger. Despite the terrible advice they offered him, Job still praised God. In his grieving and illness, Job’s friends came and sat with him. Next Job was afflicted with terrible skin sores and yet, he persevered and praised God. In the course of one day, Job was told by different servants that all his belongings and possessions, livestock and ten children had been killed or destroyed by natural disasters or thieves.ĭespite all this, Job still praised God, even in his sorrow. The only restriction God placed on Satan was he could not take Job’s life. So he asked if he could torture Job and God allowed it. Satan wanted to prove a point to God, that he could break man’s will. He served God and was a diligent follower. Job was a faithful man, blameless and upright. I suggest you read the story for yourself, in its entirety, but I’ll hit the highlights. Yet through it all, Job stayed true to God and his faith. His example was one of extreme pain and sorrow. The first, and perhaps most popular story of perseverance that comes to mind, is the epic story of Job. Let’s take a look at 5 examples of perseverance in the Bible and see what they can teach us. There are numerous stories and scriptures on perseverance guiding us in this area. ![]() The Bible isn’t silent on this topic either. 5 Examples of Perseverance in the Bible … This is why we must all learn how to persevere in the faith, regardless of life’s circumstances. Whatever the case, this word means different things to different people at different stages of life. It has a definition that you might not even be able to put into words. In that case, perseverance means a whole lot to you. Or perhaps, you’ve been put through the wringer so to speak. Perhaps you haven’t had to endure a lot of life’s ups and downs. What does the word perseverance mean to you? I’m excited to have Landen Melton as my guest today-offering inspiration from the Bible on how we can persevere like Job, Jeremiah, Apostle Paul, the Persistent Widow and Jesus. There is a stop at Cermak–Chinatown on this portion. The Red Line leaves at 16th Street and continues southward on an elevated structure to 24th Street. The Purple Line shares the distinction only when it runs its weekday rush hour route.Īt 13th Street, the subway swings away from State Street on a reverse curve to the southwest then rises to another portal at 16th Street adjacent Metra's Rock Island District line. Unique to the Red Line, it is the only Chicago "L" line that connects to all seven other "L" lines full-time. This service was used again from April 2017 to November 2017 and July 2018 to April 2019. The 13th Street portal was used again for regular "L" service from May 2013, until October 2013, because Red Line trains were rerouted to the Green Line's South Side Main Line tracks and terminated at Ashland/63rd during the five months of the Red Line South Reconstruction Project. ![]() The 13th Street portal is now used for non-service train moves and emergency purposes. This section was used from October 1943, until February 1993, when trains from Howard were routed to the Englewood and Jackson Park branches, today the south branches of the Green Line. South of Roosevelt Road, there is a junction, with one pair of tracks curving to the east and leaving the subway at 13th Street and connecting to the old South Side "L" at 18th and State Streets. The North Side Main Line of the Red Line travels from Howard station to Armitage station.Īfter running through Armitage, the Red Line descends to a portal at Willow Street and enters the subway, turning southeast on Clybourn Avenue, east at Division Street, and south at State Street through the Loop to Roosevelt Road. Additionally, Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, is served by the Sox–35th station. Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, is served by the Addison station. Red Line trains run on the two middle tracks, only making two stops at Belmont & Fullerton and skipping Wellington, Diversey and Armitage. South of Belmont, Red, Brown and Purple Line Express trains run side-by-side on the four track North Side "L" to Armitage. The Brown Line ( Ravenswood) joins the Red Line tracks just north of Belmont. The "L" continues southward running adjacent the Graceland Cemetery, Irving Park Road and Sheffield Avenue from Uptown to Lincoln Park. From here, the route transitions from concrete embankment to steel elevated structure. The Red Line extends southeasterly on an elevated embankment structure about a half-mile (1 kilometer) west of the lakefront to Touhy Avenue then turns south along Glenwood Avenue to Morse station.įrom there the route swings on a sweeping reverse curve to the east to Sheridan Road, adjacent to Loyola University Chicago and continues southerly parallel to Broadway to the east (in Edgewater) and follows Broadway to Leland Avenue. ![]() The northern terminus of the Red Line is Howard in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, on the north side. In December 2022, the Chicago City Council approved the creation of a district that will send nearly $1 billion in tax revenue over the next few decades to extend the Red Line south of 95th Street, a major step toward completing the project after a half-century of false starts. ![]() The City of Chicago is planning an extension of the Red Line, adding 5.6 miles and four new stations, that would extend the Red Line from 95th Street to 130th Street. Like Chicago's Blue Line, the Red Line runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, making Chicago, New York City, and Copenhagen the only three cities in the world that operate train service 24 hours a day throughout their city limits. It runs elevated from the Howard station in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side, through a subway on the Near North Side, Downtown, and the South Loop, and then through the Dan Ryan Expressway median to 95th/Dan Ryan in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side. The route is 26 miles (42 km) long with a total of 33 stations. It is the busiest line on the "L" system, with an average of 93,457 passengers boarding each weekday in 2022. The Red Line is a rapid transit line in Chicago, run by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) as part of the Chicago "L" system. ![]() ![]() Shale is available with all retail copies of DA - but you have to enter a code to download him. Edit! I'm a fool, as some non-fools have observed - I had presumed he was the same as the Warden's Keep DLC, as the store pages are careful to only mention him in regard to the collector's edition. Shale is only available to people who paid for the Collector's Edition of DA, around £10 more than the standard. There's a wider issue here, which we'll probably get into it a post of its own. You absolutely have to include him in your party - except, to bring up the big problem I foreshadowed earlier, you probably can't. His abilities are splendid, too - lobbing boulders, a pair of Hellboy fists, or turning into a frozen obelisk that mega-buffs the rest of the party. He's the NPC I'd choose to have a romance with, but it rather seems he's not equipped for it.Įvidently, he's a parody of/homage to the sort of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy figure that's become a mainstay of popular culture, and maybe there'd be some discomfort about Bioware playing to broad stereotypes - except for the fact he's clearly the best, most likeable and enthusiastically written character in the game. He's also beguiling childlike - there's a great conversation between him and Leilana about shoes, him having essentially never heard of them before but loving the idea, and nervously suggesting what colour he'd prefer. Of course, he's immensely likeable about it, off in his own little world rather than frowning about Darkspawn. He's prissy, he's concerned that his gemstones (a neat way of applying weapon and armour upgrades) don't complement each other and he regards the rest of the party as really rather grubby. Is that an insulting way of putting it? It's not intended as such, certainly. A few words in, the shock of his non-golemnity overcome, I listened to what he said and how he said it, and I realised what he was. What is it with this game and its thin voices? Oh, wait. ![]() Another clipped English voice, reedy and weak, not the big, booming, stony golem-voice I'd expected. When Shale first spoke, after I'd completed a quest to earn the magic rod and codeword necessary to wake him from a long, petrified slumber in the centre of a human village, I sighed before he even finished his sentence. This article contained embedded media which can no longer be displayed. Plus, he's pathologically afraid of birds. Maybe it's lazy, but it's hard to disagree with someone who ritually suggests solving moral dilemmas by stomping everyone involved into paste. He's also cheerfully homicidal, as was HK-47, and killed his master, as did HK-47. Which is why he's the most welcome presence in the game. He's its Rosencratz & Guildenstein, its Deadpool - creeping as close as the broadly po-faced dark fantasy comes to breaking the fourth wall. As KOTOR's psycho-C3PO was, Shale is the guy who doesn't quite fit the tone of the game, because he doesn't take anything seriously. Shale is HK-47 through-and-through, and, I suspect, very self-consciously so on Bioware's part. Even more ideally, Alistair and Morrigan would get it on, as their constant, comedy bickering very much evokes sexual tension. (I'm not, but because of him wish I was - I'd much rather flirt against his cheery put-downs than Morrigan's snide oh-I'm-bit-naughty-me line. That very much extends to its party members - for instance, Alistair isn't KOTOR's drippy Carth in as much he's someone you can bear to have a conversation with, but he's still the first guy you recruit, the one with the heart of gold and the key love interest if you're playing a woman. It's really not, but it gets the point across). Then I met Shale, the golem - almost immediately the game's bright, dazzling star.īioware tend to revisit a lot of themes and structures in their games (if this was snappier and funnier, it'd have been worth a post. Could I really make it through a couple of dozen hours with these ciphers, these stereotypes, these appalling cod-Euro accents? (Though, seriously, I like Alistair a lot). As for wide-eyed, pseudo-French bard Leilana - well, my cat could read those lines better than her. Facetious holy warrior Alistair had a nice line in comic deflections, but arch sorceress Morrigan seemed a textbook line in sneery, sultry know-it-alls (though I'm sure there are many stings to be found in her self-confident tale) and, while the dog was sort of cute, it wasn't exactly chatty. Sure, I was having fun, but my party, the people I was travelling with, were pretty dry. My first few hours with Bioware's latest had more worried I wasn't going to be entertained. Danger! Danger! This contains a few minor, character-specific spoilers - but nothing to do with DA's main plot. ![]() This is especially helpful for plugins or game features that require gameplay tags. ![]() “I’d do 20 reps of 315, and then have guys pull off plates. Instead of always starting his bench press with 135 and going up from there, Arnold would apply new techniques so his chest didn’t know what was coming. The principles Arnold used to shock his body ranged from dropsets, to strip sets, to burn-out sets. “You have to go and use the shocking principle,” he says. To avoid that, Arnold broke out the big guns. If your body can prepare, then your training routine gets too easy and you won’t see much growth. If, on Monday, you consistently go from the bench press to the chin-up bar, your body will eventually get to know all of your “tricks” and will adapt. When you’re training to build muscle, your body can quickly adapt to the same routine. We all believed in doing 500 reps of Roman chair sit-ups.” SHOCK THERAPY “The regular training we did for abs was just leg raises, knee raises, crunches, and sit-ups. ![]() “I did back squats, front squats, leg extensions, lunges, single-leg deadlifts, good morning exercises, and a lot of leg curls.” ABS ![]() “The squat is the most important exercise to create big thighs,” says Arnold. When you’re doing the lateral raises, you turn your wrist outward-it’s a fantastic rear-delt exercise.” LEGS He had a cut out in the bench so you didn’t have to look sideways. “This is a specialty that I learned at Vince Gironda’s gym. “I also did bent-over lateral raises on the 45-degree bench,” he continues. “We always did presses behind the neck and a special dumbbell press which would stretch out the front delt at the bottom and fully flex it at the top. And then triceps push downs and overhead triceps extensions later.” SHOULDERSĪrnold’s shoulders were built by barbell presses, behind-the-neck barbell presses, lateral raises, military presses, and dumbbell presses. ![]() “For triceps,” Arnold says, “we did a lot of narrow bench press in the early days. You need that biceps peak for back shots.” “Heavy concentration curls isolated the biceps to create that peak. I wanted to let the biceps know that they didn’t know what was coming, that they weren’t going to get used to my training method, and that I had all kinds of tricks up my sleeve.”Īrnold relied on the barbell curl to build thick biceps, but he also used incline dumbbell curls and concentration curls to isolate his biceps. “This is how I would go up without ever putting the barbell down. One technique he used to shock his biceps was to start by doing 1 rep with 275 pounds, and then 2 reps with a little less weight, and then 3 reps with a little less. You have to let your body free and let the lower back hold you up while you’re doing the bent-over rowing,” Arnold says, “because that’s what gives you strength and thickness in your lower back.” ARMSįor biceps work, Arnold did curls of all kinds. “There are a lot of bodybuilders who have a deficiency in their lower back. If you already have rows in your regimen, do them without anything supporting your chest. Those are the exercises I relied on from the beginning of my career to the end.” Any kind of rowing movement will give you that thickness. “For back, I did chin-ups, bent-over barbell and dumbbell rows, and the T-bar row. That exercise couldn’t be replaced by any machine.” BACK So to me, going all the way out -as far as you can go-and then coming in and touching the dumbbells together and flexing like you’re doing the most muscular pose made all the difference. “Remember, with muscles, the important thing is always to get the stretch and the flex. “The flye is the exercise that gave me the full pectoral muscle development,” he says. “The bench press, the incline bench press at different angles, and the dumbbell flye.”Īrnold was known for the size, shape, and extreme width of his chest, which he credits to an extreme stretch on the flye. “There are three chest exercises that should always be done,” Arnold says. Here are some of Schwarzenegger’s favorite exercises for building an Olympia-ready physique. That’s a mistake that a lot of people make.” Your hour in the gym is no time to “take it easy.” Every rep and every set must be done with intensity because each one is propelling you toward your goals. “Always go all-out in every set,” Arnold says. A solid training program built on basic movements will take you far, but intensity level separates the alpha wolf from the rest of the pack.
